Women in WWII
The period of World War II was a period that changed every aspect of human scoiety. Right from politics to the very societies that fought this war went through a transformational change. The notions of gender and gender specific also went a sea change. As men were conscripted for military services on the front line, women, on the home front, went into those jobs that were ealier considered only for men.

Their participation in factories, shipyards, munitions and aircrafts manufacturing industries was totally anew thing for the American society. The period is still remembered as an icon of ‘Rosie the Riveter’. A symbol what American women did during the period for the survival and safety of their nation on the home front!!
But it is an irony that the achivements and struggles that these women did for the United States as loyal and faithful citizens along with their male compatriots who served on frontlines were either deliberately or mistakenly ignored or relegated by the mainstream channels. Their stories would serve as a beacon to inspire future generations and also to remind us of the importance of inclusivity of genders in chronology.

Breaking the Social Chains
As men were recruited for military service in WW II leaving space as well as complusion for the women to fill out these slots both for their families and nation sake. They entered into jobs which were earlier male-dominated.
One of the most notable aspects was the entry of women into military service. The estabilshment of organizations like Women Army Corps (WAC) and Navy Women Reserves (WAVES) were symbols of women capabilities to serve their nation in any capacity. Whether it be in medical, technical, aviation, or espionage capacities, they did it willingly with a par excellence for the United States!!

Intelligence Agencies like Special Operation Executive (SOE) trained female spies and saboteurs for carrying out some very dangerous secret operations which were successfully carried out by them. Noor Inayat Khan and Virginia Hall were female operatives who did something unbelievable for their nation.
Propaganda and the societal needs changed the mindset about women role outside their home. Even after the War, women continued to seek employment in industries and in other fields as well. It was a rising signal of women empowerment and their role in economy, politics, and society.
Great Women Warriors
The war necessity compel women to do some extraordinary and unusual tasks which seems to be unbelievable and astonishing even today.
Varginia Hall, the American female spy for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), who operated in France behind the enemy lines and also helped in the esacpe of Allied soldiers. She was nicknamed as The Limping Lady due to her prosthetic leg but unfortunately she was forgotten and relegated from the war disscusion.

The women who actively served in the battlefields no one could ingore the Polish woman Krystyna Chiger who risked her life to save the Jewish children from the Holocaust. Noor Inayat Khan being an Indian descedant spied for the British in the occupied France. The Soviet female sniper, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, got recognition both from friends and foes alike.

Women on the Home Front
During World War II, as men were called to serve in the military, women stepped into roles traditionally held by men, demonstrating remarkable resilience and innovation.
The turning of women to industries for jobs and work marked a new era of women empowerment and participation. ‘Rosie the Riveter’ became a cultural icon of American women active participation and contribution in the economy. They not only supported their country on the frontlines but also domestically uplift the economy, and labor shortage. This was also dawn of a new gender based job switch over n the society.
The medical role of these women could not be easily ignored. Wounded, maimed, and tortured soldiers when returned homes, they would be given medical treatment by these women nurses and volunteers. They not only saved the lives of these war-torn troops but also helped them in settling in daily life.
Shaping the Future and Future
The women’s liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s could be seen as an outcome of the women role they took during WW II. Human rights activitists and the early feminists stressed for the equality of both gender irrespective of their biological structures. When women can do the same works which their male counterparts do then why their should be a difference and discrimination only on the gender basis. Thus, these Rosie Riveters of WW II became an inspirational story for the future generations to come. In this way new cutural, social, economic, and political dynamics generated te society which were challengeing the old social norms.
Challenges of War and Peace
Women active participation in war time efforts no doubt contributed to their country victory but the society was not very easy and acceptable for them. They saw these great women with suspicion and uncertainty who stepped out from the traditional line only for the cause of their nation. That’s why their acceptance, recognition, and integration after war was a hard period for them.
Once the war time Amazone warriors lauded for their bravery and success were now facing an isolation, pushing back and redundancy even by their country men. Which they find it hard and a stab in the back by their society!! Their stories are not only the stories of war, bravery, and sacrifice but also the segregation, gender biasism, and societal deception. They fought Two Wars, one on the frontlines while the second one in the society lines !!!!
It is now depends on the modern historians, commentators, educators, and media houses to bring forth to the new generations these forgotten, and unsung heroines with out whom sacrifice they would not have won their war…..
