Marie Sukloff holds a dominant and unwavering position in the Russian emigre Literature corpus. The emigre literature common themes are nostalgia, grief, identity crisis, and homelessness due to war, political persecution, or economic crises. Such literaure and themes are very common in almost all languages but the Russian and the Eastern European literature are very rich for such ideas.

The early years of the 20th century with their socioeconomic and political turmoils compelled the writers to explore these ideals and the cost they wrought upon the individuals in these countries.

Early Life in Russia

Marie Sukloff was born in a Jewish family on 18 March, 1882 in the Gordno Region of the present day Belarus. Her father and mother were painter and musician respectively.

At that time this region was a hotbed of political, economic, and social turmoils levelled against the tyranny of the Tsar of Russia. Such environment plus birth in an artistic family shaped her worldview for rest of her life.

The politcal and economic events of 1905 like the Russo-Japanese war, and the resultan 1905 Russian revolution unleashed a terror of violence and tension in the whole of country.

Marie Sukloff parents used their arts and skills to depict the oppressions and loss on the Russians. Her journey was not an even one. She left Russia in October 1917 due the Bolshevik Revolution for seeking a refuge in some better place where she could express herself artistically and in a better way.
